Everton have only scored one goal from their opening three Premier League matches this season.
Danny Murphy has made it clear to Marco Silva that he now needs to start his new Everton’s signings ‘irrelevant’ of whether they are fit enough to start or not.
On Friday night, Silva opted to start Dominic Calvert-Lewin against Aston Villa and not summer signing Moise Kean, with the former producing a poor display.
In the second half, when Silva’s side were chasing the game, Kean and Alex Iwobi came on as substitutes as they made some impact in the final third.
Speaking to Match of the Day on BBC One (24/08/2019 at 11:50 pm), Murphy believes Everton’s attacking displays should be a sign that things need to change in the final third.
“I think you spend a lot of money on players, irrelevant of whether they are 100%, get them in because he [Silva] is going to need them in,” Murphy told Match of the Day.
“You talk about Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean. They’ll make a difference. But put them in now. Let them get fit and play them because they don’t make enough chances. Six shots in three games.”
In the game against Villa, both Bernard and Lucas Digne started well in the opening 20 minutes, but they then fell away as Andre Gomes produced a very poor performance.
In the first half, Calvert-Lewin had a chance to open the scoring, but his shot from five yards out was blocked by Bjorn Engels on the line.
Now, Everton will be preparing for a tricky EFL Cup fixture against League One side Lincoln City, who have won back-to-back promotions in recent seasons.
