Pundit Danny Murphy has told the Daily Mail that he thinks Manchester United should move for Everton loanee Andre Gomes this summer.

Gomes had been tipped for stardom at Barcelona following a 2016 move from Valencia, but his time at the Camp Nou proved to be miserable, and he fell way down Ernesto Valverde’s pecking order.

The Portuguese international decided to move on this summer, heading out on loan to Everton to try and recapture some form – and he’s done exactly that.

Gomes has impressed in the Everton midfield, proving quality on the ball whilst striking up a strong partnership with Idrissa Gueye in the heart of Marco Silva’s engine room.

Mundo Deportivo claim that Everton do have an option to sign Gomes this summer, but it’s more of a first refusal than a mandatory buyout clause, leaving the Toffees open to losing him this summer.

A fee of around €20million (£17million) was mentioned, even though that seems to be on the cheap side, and The Telegraph recently noted that Tottenham Hotspur are keen to swoop in and beat Everton to Gomes.

Marcel Brands will want to keep Gomes at Goodison Park, but he won’t be able to stop any bids from rival Premier League clubs as Barcelona hold all the power in the battle for Gomes’s signature.

Now, pundit Murphy has suggested that Manchester United should be bidding for Gomes, believing that he has the control in possession that United need, urging them to move ahead of Arsenal and Everton for his services.

“Verratti would be a good buy for United. So would Andre Gomes, who has looked extremely accomplished on loan at Everton from Barcelona,” said Murphy. “I’ve seen Arsenal linked with Gomes but United’s need is as great. Fred was meant to be the answer but we haven’t seen it,” he added.
