Danny Murphy has expressed his ‘surprise’ at how Tottenham Hotspur used Victor Wanyama, who is seemingly heading for the exit door.

The Daily Mail have claimed that Wanyama is set to seal a move to Club Brugge before the European transfer window shuts because he has fallen down the pecking order at the North London club.

The 28-year-old hardly featured last season, with injuries playing their part, as he is yet to feature this term and his three years at Tottenham could now be coming to an end.

Speaking to Jim White on TalkSport (26/08/2019 at 10:10 am), Murphy believes that given his qualities Wanyama should have been used a lot more by Mauricio Pochettino.

“Good signing [for Brugge if he moves], I like him,” Murphy told TalkSport. “He’s a very, very good player. They are struggling a bit, aren’t they? I say struggling, it’s been an average start.

“He is exactly what you need when you are struggling. Someone who can come in and put his foot in. He can play aswell and he can get the odd goal.

“I’m surprised Tottenham didn’t use him more because a couple of years ago, him and Dembele had a partnership in the centre of midfield, which was absolutely phenomenal. It really was. He had a couple of injuries, so maybe he’s just struggled to come back the same. But good luck to him.”

The form fo Moussa Sissoko last season, the continual rise of Harry Winks and the recent signing of Tanguy Ndombele has made it even difficult for Wanyama to earn regular game time.

It could be argued that Pochettino’s best time at Tottenham was during their last season at White Hart Lane when Wanyama was playing alongside the now-departed Mousa Dembele in the middle of the park.

Nonetheless, Wanyama is now seemingly heading to Belgium’s top-tier, with a number of familiar faces playing in that league, including ex-Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany.
