Sunderland were beaten 4-1 by Arsenal in their latest match.

Danny Murphy has told Match of the Day, which was broadcast on 31st October, that David Moyes needs to show more positivity with his tactics at Sunderland.

The Black Cats were beaten 4-1 by Arsenal in their latest outing, and Murphy saw few signs of progress.

The former Fulham and Liverpool midfielder felt that Sunderland were far too defensive against Arsenal, which is what led to their defeat.

“I’m struggling [to see progress],” Murphy said. “He has to defend his team, I accept that. But there was a real problem for Sunderland in their shape.

“They forgot to press, they didn’t make any tackles and they just let Arsenal play. At times, all the players apart from Defoe are so deep that it was so easy. I couldn’t believe what was going on.

“It was as if it didn’t matter. They never really went for it, and if Sunderland continue to play with this negativity and fear they have no chance.”

Sunderland had fallen behind against Arsenal, when Alexis Sanchez netted in the first-half.

They did get back into the game, though, with Jermain Defoe scored from the spot.

At that point it looked as if Sunderland may have gone on to get something out of the match, but Arsenal quickly asserted their authority.

A quick fire double from Olivier Giroud put them into a commanding lead, before Sanchez completed the triumph.

Sunderland are now seven points adrift of safety, with their next fixture coming against Bournemouth.
