The Sheffield United boss is not thought to be among the main contenders for the Newcastle United vacancy.
Newcastle United would be better off hiring the Sheffield United manager, Chris Wilder, than two of their reported targets, according to Danny Murphy.
Newcastle have yet to be formally credited with an interest in Wilder, although the 51-year-old is among the bookmakers’ contenders.
The Manchester City number two, Mikel Arteta, and the Belgium boss, Roberto Martinez, are among those being strongly linked with the job vacated by Rafa Benitez at the end of last month.
But speaking as a co-host on Jim White’s Talksport show earlier, Murphy explained that Wilder would be the best suited of the three to keep Newcastle in the Premier League.
“I think Newcastle’s variation under Rafa was very good,” said the former Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and England midfielder. “I’m not sure you’d get that with Martinez and Arteta.
“I think Chris Wilder, I’d be amazed if he left the club he loves, Sheffield United, but money does talk. Maybe he would. He would be better suited because he knows how to get the best out of players.
“For the squad Newcastle have got at the minute, because of the way they’d have to play to stay in the league, yeah (Wilder would be the best suited), in my opinion.
“I think if they try and go pure football with Martinez or Arteta, although I think it would be brave and it might work, I think that would be a massive risk. “
Conceding that Wilder would also be the least likely of the three to take the Newcastle reins, Murphy went on to suggest the Magpies hire their former manager, Chris Hughton.
Hughton spent the previous two campaigns keeping Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League against the odds.
