Danny Murphy thinks Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool won’t sign Arsenal transfer target Romeo Lavia from Southampton because of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

After securing the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, which cost Liverpool less than £100 million in transfer fees, Murphy says his former club won’t spend ‘huge money’ for the remainder of the summer transfer window on a midfield player, as he told talkSPORT.

Romeo Lavia, after Southampton’s relegation to the Championship, is a player that many admire in the Premier League, including Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal who are ready to bid for the 19-year-old.

At Lavia’s age and current status, if managers the calibre of Jurgen Klopp and Arteta come knocking, then it’s pretty hard to turn down.

Whether he ends up at Anfield or the Emirates, you would trust those within the four walls of those football clubs to take his game to the next level – Jadon Sancho labelled him a ‘very special’ player.

But given Alexander-Arnold’s foray into the middle of the park during the final months of last season, on top of the new signings, Murphy can’t see another midfield player joining.

“I don’t think we will see Liverpool spend huge money on Lavia or another midfield player because of Trent, I don’t” said Murphy.

Lavia has the world at his feet

Southampton had the youngest squad in the Premier League last season and it showed on the pitch as they failed to get their engine going before deservedly finishing rock bottom.

But amid the doom and gloom of relegation, it could be argued that Lavia was one of the club’s better players and someone who can hold his head up high.

An aggressive-minded player with and without the ball, the Belgian star has the world at his feet and he can transform into a high-quality box-to-box midfielder if he makes the right steps during these coming years.
