Danny Murphy has told Talksport he thinks Liverpool were a bit quick to sell Charlie Adam to Stoke City.

Adam arrived at Anfield four years ago in a £6.75 million deal from Blackpool, for whom he had impressed during the club’s solitary Premier League campaign.

The Scot played 37 times for the Reds, scoring two goals, but was sold to the Potters on the final day of the 2012 summer transfer window, having failed to feature in the plans of new boss Brendan Rodgers.

But as far as another former Liverpool midfielder, Murphy, is concerned – his departure was a little bit premature.

“I thought Liverpool were a bit quick to get rid of him, I really do,” the pundit told Thursday’s Jim White show. “Because they weren’t blessed with an abundance of creativity at that time.

“You could argue that under Jurgen Klopp he might not have the mobility that Klopp wants, but at the time it was a bit soon.

“He is a very gifted… he sees the pictures, and that’s what you want from a midfield player.”

Adam has made well over 100 Stoke appearances but is yet to feature in the Premier League this season – the final one of his contract at the Bet365 Stadium.

Ironically, the former Rangers midfielder’s place has been seized by Joe Allen, who signed from Liverpool in July.

And it was Allen’s 2012 arrival from Swansea which ultimately spelled the end of Adam’s short Anfield career.
