Tottenham Hotspur reportedly wanted to sign Frenkie de Jong from Ajax in the summer transfer window.
According to The Daily Star, Tottenham tried to sign De Jong from Ajax in the summer transfer window for £25 million.
It has also been reported that the Dutch giants now value the youngster at £71m.
Spurs could reignite their interest in the 21-year-old Netherlands international midfielder in January or next summer.
Former Tottenham midfielder Murphy has suggested that De Jong would be a good signing for the North London outfit.
The former England international has also stated that the midfielder’s situation might be similar to Tottenham winger Lucas Moura.
Murphy told Bwin: “I think Frenkie De Jong would be a good signing for Tottenham and he would definitely bring a new dimension to the squad.
“I think good recruitment creates a manager’s success and bad recruitment gets the manager a sack. Pochettino’s recruitment has been fantastic and I would trust him to improve the side.
“De Jong might be similar to Lucas Moura in the sense it could take him a while to become familiar with the Premier League, but now he’s a near guaranteed starter making a big difference in the big games.”
Too expensive for Tottenham Hotspur
De Jong is a very talented and promising young midfielder, and the Dutchman would be a good signing for Tottenham.
However, if Ajax value the 21-year-old at £71m, then it is hard to see Spurs cough up that much cash, especially with Manchester United, Manchester City and Barcelona interested in him, as reported by The Daily Star.
