Liverpool have now taken the Premier League title race to the last day of the season.
Danny Murphy has shared how Virgil van Dijk played a big part in Liverpool’s winning goal during their 3-2 victory at Newcastle on Saturday evening.
The BBC Sport pundit noticed how Van Dijk signalled to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Xherdan Shaqiri to deliver an in-swinger rather than an outswinger when his team were awarded a free-kick by the corner flag on the right-hand side.
At first, it seemed as though the right-footed Alexander-Arnold was going to deliver the ball in, but after Van Dijk’s signal, it was Shaqiri who took command and the rest was history.
Speaking to Match of the Day on BBC One (04/05/2019 at 10:45 pm), Murphy spoke about what Van Dijk did leading up to the winning goal.
“Well, Van Dijk we noticed didn’t we when he was watching it, he’s telling them [Alexander-Arnonld and Shaqiri] to do an in-swinger than an outswinger,” Murphy told Match of the Day.
“They’ve scored two goals from outswingers, but they’ve scored more headed goals than any team this season, which is incredible. Leadership by Van Dijk.”
The game at St James’ Park was another stern test for Jurgen Klopp and his players, who have now taken the Premier League title race to the final day of the season.
At this moment in time, they are two points ahead of Manchester City in the table and Pep Guardiola’s side can go top if they beat Leicester City on Monday night.
Dropped points by Pep Guardiola’s side against the Foxes will see Liverpool go into the final game of the season in control of their own destiny and in with a chance of breaking their 29-year duck without a league title.
