Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy is backing James Maddison to record the most amount of assists in the Premier League this season.
James Maddison joined Tottenham from Leicester City earlier in the summer and has already set up two goals in the new campaign.
Murphy, who was reminded that Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne has been ruled out of action for the next few months, was asked to predict who will register the most Premier League assists this term on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel FIVE.
“Maddison, I’ll stick with it just because he takes all the set plays and Tottenham are going to win games and score goals,” the ex-England international said.
Last season, De Bruyne produced 16 assists in the English top flight, earning him the Playmaker of the Season award for a third time.
James Maddison can win the Playmaker of the Season award
With De Bruyne out injured, Maddison definitely does have a chance of claiming the accolade.
In the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, the attacking midfielder recorded nine assists in a Leicester side that went on to get relegated.

Now playing in a better team, it is not impossible that he surpasses that number. And as Murphy mentioned, he is on set-pieces at Tottenham, which will help him in his pursuit of the Playmaker of the Season award.
Maddison’s main focus this term, though, will obviously be trying to help Spurs get back into the top four and Champions League.
With there being a lot of quality sides at the top end of the Premier League right now, however, it is going to be a difficult task for Ange Postecoglou’s men.
Whatever the case, Maddison is already proving to be a shrewd addition to Tottenham’s squad after his display in the 2-2 draw against Brentford.
