Rodgers’ Leicester City side are flying, in stark contrast to Silva’s Everton.
Danny Murphy has stood by claims he made around 18 months ago that the now Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers would have been a better bet for Everton than Marco Silva.
Silva has found his second season as Everton boss more difficult than the first and there is talk that another change could be on the horizon at Goodison Park.
Rodgers, meanwhile, has led Leicester to third in the early Premier League table, having transformed the Foxes’ fortunes since taking charge in February.
Appearing on Talksport earlier this morning (Monday), Murphy, who made his name as a central midfielder with Everton’s city rivals Liverpool, insisted that Leicester and Rodgers are a perfect fit.
But the now-retired Chester native said: “I was on a show a while back when the Everton manager’s job was up for debate and they were trying to get Silva. I said even then that Rodgers was a better bet than Silva, I did, and I think I’m still correct with that.”
Asked whether Rodgers, a former Liverpool manager, would have wanted to Everton job, Murphy replied: “Well he’s got a big house in Liverpool. His wife is a Liverpudlian.
“Although, after managing Liverpool, it would have been difficult. It’s still a club on the up, like Leicester, trying to progress and compete. So I thought maybe that would have tempted him away from Celtic.
“But Everton made their decision to go for Silva. I just thought Rodgers has more experience in the English game. He’s tactically more versatile. And, overall, the job he did at Liverpool was very well received by the supporters. He was a game away from winning the league and it’s just a thin line in football. If he’d have won the league they’d probably have a statue there and he’d still be in a job.”
Everton have now lost four of their last five Premier League fixtures and sit just two points above the relegation zone, in 15th place.
