Danny Murphy has been singing the praises of Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones.
The 19-year-old has enjoyed a week to remember on Merseyside.
Last Sunday, Jones scored the second goal as Liverpool beat Aston Villa 2-0, before the club’s hierarchy rewarded the youngster with a new, long-term contract.
The good news kept coming for the Kirkby academy gem, who was given his full Premier League debut in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield.
With Adam Lallana set to leave on a Bosman soon, it looks like Liverpool intend to promote Jones to first-team duties rather than sign an experienced replacement for the former Southampton midfielder.
And Murphy has praised his performance against the Clarets yesterday, adding that he’s going to save his old club money in the transfer market due to his quality.
Murphy told BBC’s Match of the Day: “He was confident, he was asking for the ball, getting it in tight areas and trying to play through with little intricate passes. He kept probing, he doesn’t play safe, he tries to make an impact on the game and that’s what you want. That’s what you need to do when you play for Liverpool.
“It was a terrific debut for him and he’s going to save Liverpool some money in the market, that’s for sure.”
Jones, who scored a worldie in an FA Cup win over Everton in January, is clearly a huge talent, but it’s worth remembering that he’s only 19.
He isn’t going to be at the same level as a Gini Wijnaldum or a Jordan Henderson or any other of Klopp’s midfielders just yet and therefore it has to be remembered that it’ll take time before Liverpool see the very, very best of him.
