Tottenham Hotspur won their first Premier League game of the season yesterday, with a goal from Victor Wanyama proving the difference in a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane.

Spurs were impressive throughout the game and there is no doubt that they could have won the game much more comfortably.

One aspect of the game that really caught the eye was the formation. Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino went with both new signing Vincent Janssen and Harry Kane starting the game – with the England international operating in the hole behind the Dutchman.

It worked wonders with the pair playing very well together, leaving one former Spurs midfielder very impressed.

Danny Murphy, who spent one relatively uninspiring season with Spurs ten years ago, had this to say about Kane’s performance on Match of the Day this weekend (20/08/2016):

“It’s given Kane the freedom to drop deep.

“You see the little pockets he’s getting in; he really enjoys that because he has such a good shot as well.

“He really linked up well and I am really excited by it.

“I think Harry Kane’s body language was really good today. It’s like he was all over the place, he didn’t have to think about staying up high because in that role you can drift.”

Kane certainly did look comfortable slotting into his new position, whilst Janssen was also a positive as the lead front-man.

The concern of course will be that Kane fails to score with the regularity that he has in the past two seasons if deployed in this deeper position.

But if Janssen can start finding the net, as well as Kane, it could be the difference between Spurs being nearly men or actually lifting some silverware this term.
