Danny Murphy has told BBC Radio 5 Live that he thinks Brighton boss Graham Potter will have “bigger fish to fry” than Everton. The Seagulls gaffer has been linked with replacing Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park.

Benitez was given his marching orders on Sunday after Everton suffered a 2-1 defeat to Norwich at Carrow Road. They are in danger of being dragged into a relegation scrap, after losing nine of their last 12 league games.

Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright have made the decision to sack Benitez – which was a controversial appointment in the first place, given his Liverpool connections. Indeed, they will now go about finding a successor.

Potter has been understandably linked with the Everton job, as he continues to impress at Brighton with both his style of play – but also, points on the board. But Murphy thinks he has already outgrown Everton.

“You never know someone’s motivations. I would be very surprised to see Potter leave Brighton. Maybe down the line he would have bigger fish to fry given how well he is doing,” Murphy told 5 Live, as quoted by BBC Live.

Murphy on Potter: Has Brighton boss already surpassed Everton?

A move to Everton from Brighton would be a step up, without question. Potter would be joining a much bigger club – no disrespect to Brighton – and have more funds available to spend. A better quality of player, too.

But Murphy has a point when he suggests that Potter is already showing the kind of managerial quality bigger Premier League sides might pursue. Tottenham were linked, before settling for Nuno Espirito Santo.

Everton seems to be a bit of a poisoned chalice at the moment, with expectation outweighing the quality they possess. But Potter would be silly not to consider a move to Goodison Park any time soon.
