Pundit Danny Murphy has told the Daily Mail that he thinks Tottenham Hotspur are still some way off a title challenge this season.

Spurs have enjoyed a superb transfer window, which ended on Friday evening with a deal for Swansea City centre back Joe Rodon.

Joe Hart, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Gareth Bale and Carlos Vinicius were Tottenham’s other signings, adding real depth and quality.

Jose Mourinho wanted two players for every position, and he now has exactly that, with Tottenham’s squad looking very strong.

Spurs smashed Manchester United 6-1 in their last game before the international break, and can now welcome Rodon, Vinicius and star signing Bale into the mix.

With all that in mind, Spurs seem to be a major threat in the upper reaches of the table – and some even think that Tottenham could challenge for the title.

Liverpool have lost Alisson and Virgil van Dijk to injury, Manchester City are without Kevin De Bruyne, and both sides have dropped points in the early stages of the season.

However, pundit Murphy believes Tottenham simply have too many frailties at the back and in midfield, which will ultimately stop them from challenging for the title – but a top four finish and a cup final win are well within reach.

“I think a top-four finish has to be Tottenham’s ambition now they’ve added Bale, otherwise why would they bother? Some excited voices think they are title contenders after the rout at Old Trafford,” said Murphy. “I don’t subscribe to that view, they still have too many frailties in defence and midfield. But a cup and Champions League spot? Why not — the squad looks as if it has greater depth now,” he added.
