Spurs man Winks has struggled with lots of injuries of late.
Danny Murphy has told TalkSPORT that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has the ability to answer England’s midfield dilemma, but does not expect him to match the talent of Paul Gascoigne.
The 22-year-old is considered a key member in Spurs’ first team under Mauricio Pochettino, but has recently suffered with plenty of injuries including a long-term ankle problem.
Since his debut, Winks has clocked up 64 appearances for Spurs in all competitions, and even broke into the England side during his purple patch – after two excellent performances in the Champions League against Real Madrid.
There has been plenty of debate over England’s lack of a deep-lying creative midfielder and Murphy believes Winks is the man to answer Gareth Southgate’s search, but believes he is far from the talent of ex-Spurs star Gascoigne.
“The one who I think has got the capability more than anyone else is Winks,” Murphy said. “What he showed in that game in Madrid, when he was fit and at it, was the confidence and ability to play and get his foot in.
“He’s got to get fit first and foremost. He’s not going to be Paul Gascoigne, that’s not what I’m saying, but for me, Winks is one of the best when he’s at it in terms of all-round ability.”
Winks is yet to break back into Pochettino’s starting eleven this season as he looks to regain 100 per cent fitness, managing only six minutes across three Premier League appearances this summer.
The likes of Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama provide the competition for one-time England international, who has five years remaining on his contract in north London.
But if Winks can begin to regain his fitness and prove his worth at Spurs, then Murphy is confident he can break into the England set up once again.
