Pundit criticises Sunderland’s spending.
Sunderland manager David Moyes
Sunderland have endured a nightmare start to the season, heading into late October still searching for their first Premier League win.
They have scored just six goals in nine games in the top flight, with Jermain Defoe scoring four of them and Patrick van Aanholt netting twice.

Former Premier League ace Danny Murphy has criticised manager David Moyes’ summer spending, insisting he is culpable for their problems, for failing to sign a striker.
Speaking to TalkSPORT on Monday evening, Murphy said: “Defoe is the only goal threat. He’s signed a centre-half (Djibilodj), a record signing midfielder (Ndong), he’s game, hes having a go, but not a world beater.
“There is some responsibility on the manager even though he’s walked in to a poor squad. Go and get yourself a striker at least.”

Moyes’ Sunderland lost 1-0 at West Ham at the weekend, conceding an injury time winner, which sums up how their luck is going at present.
Top scorer Defoe recently turned 34, and the expectation placed on him is clearly too much, with younger squad members like Fabio Borini unable to shoulder the burden.
Regardless of the position Sunderland find themselves in by the January transfer window, the Black Cats will need to add a striker – or two – to their squad in order to have a better chance of survival.
