Danny Murphy has told BBC Sport that his former club Tottenham Hotspur probably over spent on winger Moussa Sissoko.
The 27-year-old joined Spurs from Newcastle United on deadline day in a £30 million move which saw him become Tottenham’s joint most expensive signing of all time.
His switch to North London came on the back of a prolific Euro 2016 with France, in which he helped his country reach the final, but his form for relegated Newcastle last season left a little to be desired at times.
But although Murphy believes that the Lilywhites spent a little too much on Sissoko, the former Spurs midfielder says he could have a “really good” first season at White Hart Lane under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
“I don’t think that a few good games at Euro 2016 warrant the £30m fee that Moussa Sissoko has been valued at, certainly given the form that he showed for Newcastle last season,” Murphy told BBC Sport.
“But what this Spurs side needs is pace and that is what he provides. He has the raw materials and Mauricio Pochettino will relish getting his hands on him. He could have a really good season there.”
If Sissoko can replicate the form he showed in Euro 2016 then the £30 million might come to be thought of as a bargain in seasons to come.
He showed plenty of pace, power and passion during his outings with les Bleus and Newcastle fans might have wondered where those qualities were last term.
Perhaps he simply felt like he did not have much to prove on Tyneside any longer, but there is plenty of motivation to impress at Spurs.
