Danny Murphy claims Tottenham will struggle to get into top four after poor summer

The midfielder is not at all impressed with what he has seen from Spurs this summer.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy has told talkSPORT that he thinks the club will struggle to even finish in the top four this season after what he believes has been a poor summer of transfer activity.

Spurs made five major signings this summer, adding to the earlier arrivals of striker Vincent Janssen and midfielder Victor Wanyama with deadline-day deals for winger Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and goalkeeper Pau Lopez.

In perhaps the most high-profile transfer on deadline day, they also broke their club record to bring £30 million midfielder Moussa Sissoko to White Hart Lane.

Murphy had already voiced his disappointment at Tottenham’s transfer activity before the signing of Sissoko was confirmed, and he has now gone even further.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Spurs midfielder suggested Sissoko was the only starting XI-quality signing made by the club, and suggested that they could well miss out on a place in the top four this season.

Murphy said: “If you asked me, when everybody is fit at Tottenham, and you choose your first XI – are any of the new signings in that first-team?

“Sissoko might be, or might not be – you could argue he’d get in ahead of [Christian] Eriksen or [Erik] Lamela possibly. But after his performances for Newcastle last season, he doesn’t give me great confidence that he’s going to set the world alight – but he might prove me wrong.

“I’m disappointed as a Spurs fan that they haven’t tried to compete. I know the new stadium thing can be thrown back at me in that respect, as they’ve got to prioritise – I know that. But they’ve left themselves very short. I think they’ll struggle to get into the top four.”

Spurs did not make as many high-profile signings as many fans were likely expecting, and with their top-four rivals such as both Manchester clubs and Chelsea all spending big on top European talent, Murphy may not be alone in being concerned that his old club could be left behind this term.
