Danny Murphy has told TalkSPORT (11.56AM) that Aaron Ramsdale will regret celebrating in the face of Bruno Fernandes when the Manchester United star missed his penalty during Arsenal’s 3-1 win on Saturday.
Ramsdale, 23, has been sensational for Arsenal since joining the Gunners for £30million (Sky Sports) last summer. Replacing Bernd Leno as the club’s number one stopper, he has since kept an impressive 14 clean sheets in 33.
Saturday saw Arsenal win 3-1 at The Emirates – goals coming from Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka and Granit Xhaka, cancelling out Cristiano Ronaldo’s late first-half effort. Fernandes had the chance to make it 2-2 from the spot.
But after a skip and a jump, the Portugal international hit the post – bouncing clear for a goal kick. Ramsdale jumped in the direction of Fernandes and celebrating. Murphy thinks he will regret doing what he did.
“He’ll look back on it, wants to be England goalkeeper, one of the best, keep your emotions intact. You didn’t save it mate. He’ll look back and go, I need to leave that be. If I was his manager, I’d be saying ‘don’t do that again’.”
Murphy on Ramsdale: Good for Arsenal fans, bad for goalkeeper?
Arsenal fans will have loved seeing Ramsdale doing what he did, given the rivalry between the Gunners and Manchester United. But Murphy does have a point, from Gareth Southgate’s point of view.
For Southgate to see that, with Ramsdale knocking on Jordan Pickford’s door, Ramsdale’s passion and regular antagonising of opposition players might come into his thinking. It can come back to bite you.
