Sam Byram joined West Ham United from Leeds United in January 2016.

Former Leeds United and Manchester City defender Danny Mills has suggested on BBC Sport (14:18) that Sam Byram should not have joined West Ham United.

Mills made the comments about the former Leeds youngster following the Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon.

England international midfielder Dele Alli featured for Tottenham and played a key role in the home team’s 4-0 victory over the Baggies in North London.

Former Leeds right-back Mills was following the match, and he was impressed with the performance of the 20-year-old.

The former England international has also suggested that Byram should not have moved to the Hammers.

The 23-year-old, who can operate as a right-back or as a right-winger, joined the Premier League club from Championship outfit Leeds in January 2016.

The Englishman has been able to make just six Premier League appearances for the Hammers so far this season.

“Dele Alli is a great example to young players by staying that extra year at MK Dons,” Mills told BBC Sport (14:18).

“I look at a lot of young players leaving lower-league clubs going to the Premier League and just not playing. A couple of years later they’re back down in the Championship.

“Sam Byram is a classic example at West Ham – he’s barely played but perhaps another year at Leeds and then he’d be playing week-in week-out.

“It’s tempting to go to a Premier League side but if you’re not going to play, back yourself, stay that extra year so when you make that move, you’re a first-team regular.”

West Ham are 12th in the Premier League table at the moment with 25 points from 21 matches.
