Danny Mills has shut down Leeds United’s hopes of signing Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph as he suggested that Everton should make a move for him.

The Sun have claimed that 29-year-old Delph is attracting interest from Leeds, but the £15 million-rated midfielder will be too expensive for the Championship club.

Speaking to Drivetime on TalkSport (23/05/2019 at 4:40 pm), Mills made it clear that Leeds won’t be able to sign Delph given the wages he is on as he suggested Everton and Bournemouth as other options.

On Leeds interest in Delph and whether he could still play in the Premier League: “Oh, definitely without a good [good enough to play in PL],” Mills told TalkSport. “But Leeds are not going to pay £80,000 or £100,000k-a-week or whatever he is on.

“He has a year left on his contract and £15 million is quite a heavy price tag. Will he want to go? He might just sit out and wait and then go out on a free transfer – he could perform at a lot of clubs in the Premier League.

On who might take Delph: “An Everton. Would he fit into their system? He can play that role and allow other people to go and play. Or a team like Bournemouth, they could quite do with someone of that experience and quality.”

Delph has a lot of quality in his locker, not forgetting that he has just won two Premier League titles under Pep Guardiola’s much-praised team.

The 29-year-old started his career at Elland Road, but as Leeds struggled in the second tier, Delph’s talents saw him move up to England’s top-flight.

After representing Aston Villa for a number of years, he then joined City in 2015 where he has produced arguably the best performances of his career.

If Delph is available in the summer then he’ll no doubt be an asset to most Premier League teams. He has the ability to keep the ball moving in the middle of the park and in recent seasons he has showcased his ability to play at left-back.
