Garry Monk is coming towards the end of his contract with Leeds United, but former Whites defender Danny Mills is not concerned about his future.

Former Leeds defender Danny Mills has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that he expects Garry Monk to stay on as Whites boss, and suggested that promotion in the upcoming campaign will be better for the club than if they had gone up this year.

Leeds enjoyed an incredibly promising season this term, coming within touching distance of securing a play-off spot in the Championship. But despite the promise, there appears to still be the chance of some upheaval at Elland Road with Monk’s contract set to expire next month.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that co-owner Andrea Radrizzani wants to agree a three-year deal with Monk once his full takeover goes through, but the head coach is looking for assurances regarding things like budget before he puts pen to paper.

But while some fans may be concerned about whether the door is being left open for another club to try and swoop in, Mills is confident that Monk will stay, and suggested that missing out on promotion last term may actually be beneficial in the long run.

“I’d expect Garry to be here for another season at the very least,” he told the Yorkshire Evening Post. “I hear all the talk and yes, they’ll have things to sort out but this is a good fit for both parties and I think they know that.

“If the club had made the play-offs and won promotion this season then great but I actually think the ideal scenario is to go up next year. The club would be better prepared, you’d imagine they’d be more stable again and they’ve got the basis of a good season and a good young team to work with now.”

The contrast between Leeds’ most recent Championship performance and the previous handful of bottom-half finishes should surely make keeping that core that took the Whites so close to the top six a priority for the summer, and Monk is surely at the centre of that core.

Monk’s side threatened to be on the verge of something special, and it would hardly be a surprise if a number of players within the current squad were less than happy if Monk was not in charge next year, and similarly, it would not be surprising if a number of potential targets were put off somewhat if another head coach was put in place.
