It has been a tough start to the season for Newcastle United and their January signing Miguel Almiron.
Danny Mills has claimed that Miguel Almiron won’t be keen on Steve Bruce because he was purchased by Newcastle United for Rafa Benitez and his style of play.
Almiron joined Newcastle in January for a then club-record fee when he swapped the MLS for England’s top-flight, but at the time, Benitez was in the St James’ Park hot seat.
In his first few games, Almiron looked impressive on the ball, but since the start of the new Premier League season, and working under a new manager, that early spark has faded.
Speaking to TalkSport on (18/08/2019 at 2:15 pm), Mills made a claim about the differing expectations at the club and what Almiron will be thinking.
“The expectations from the fans are very, very high,” Mills told Talksport. “The owner’s expectation are completely different from what the fans have. And you’re on a hiding to nothing. Unless you go there, finish 10th in the league and win a trophy, you’d be considered a failure.
“They brought in Almiron last season, who I didn’t know anything about. He looked good for four or five games. He looked quite sharp, but he signed for Rafa Benitez and the style he wants to play. Now, you have a player who is thinking, ‘Hmm, I’m not sure about this Steve Bruce fella'”
Mills’ comments about expectations will not sit well with the Newcastle supporters because there is a bit of a myth that the Toon Army faithful have ‘high expectations’.
It seems as though the St James’ Park crowd simply want to see a team built with passion and a drive to move forward, rather than stagnate and continually be in relegation battles.
