Newcastle United are reportedly close to signing Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almiron.
BBC pundit Danny Mills has jokingly stated that Mike Ashley has ‘gone to the airport’ to stop reported signing Miguel Almiron from coming in after Newcastle’s win over Manchester City on Tuesday night.
Rafa Benitez’s side inflicted a surprise 2-1 defeat on the Premier League champions, with Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie cancelling out Sergio Aguero’s opener.
On that same day, BBC Sport claimed that Atlanta midfielder Almiron is going to undergo a medical on Tyneside, with the Magpies on the verge of breaking their 14-year transfer record.
After the match, former Premier League defender Mills commented on Newcastle’s reported new arrival and jokingly stated what owner Ashley is going to do after they picked up a valuable three points at home.
“I think Mike Ashley has gone to the airport,” Mills told BBC 5 Live. “He’s gone to passport control, ‘don’t let him in, don’t need him now, save me £20m. It looks like Rafa is doing a great job, send him back’.
That win against Pep Guardiola’s men pushed the north-east club into 14th place, and most importantly, five points clear of the relegation zone.
As for Almiron, the attacking midfielder is set to arrive from the MLS where he has showcased his versatility, technical ability and goalscoring prowess.
During the recently concluded MLS season, he played 38 games in all competitions, scoring 18 goals from the middle of the park and supplying 13 assists in the process, according to transfermarkt.
The Paraguay international will be hoping to inject some attacking intent into Newcastle’s team as they aim to finish as high as possible in the Premier League table.
