Paul Merson has said on Sky Sports News (1:28pm, August 14, 2021) that West Ham United should have signed Danny Ings before he joined Aston Villa from Southampton.
Danny Ings transfer
Ings moved to Villa from Premier League rivals Southampton earlier this month.
According to Sky Sports, the Villans paid the Saints £25 million as transfer fee to secure the services of the former Liverpool striker.
What Paul Merson thinks
Former Villa and Arsenal star Merson believes that West Ham should have gone for the 29-year-old striker.
The Hammers need a striker to compete with Michail Antonio.
Antonio is actually a winger who has been turned into a striker.

Merson said on Sky Sports News (1:28pm, August 14, 2021), as transcribed by HammersNews: “You know who would have definitely suited them, Danny Ings.
“He would have been perfect because he wasn’t too expensive and he is a man who can drop off. Antonio up front and him dropping off, to be fair he would have ticked every box.”
Does Paul Merson have a point?
Ings has had injury problems, but when fit and firing, he scores goals.
The 29-year-old found the back of the net 22 times in the league in 2019-20, and he started 32 games.

Last season, Ings scored 12 goals in 26 league starts.
The former Liverpool striker has already opened his account for Villa this season.
Ings would have been great for West Ham, but £25 million for a 29-year-old is a lot of money.
However, if West Ham are to establish themselves in the Premier League top six and want to play in Europe on a regular basis, then they have to spend this kind of money.
