Danny Ings insists he wants to fight for Liverpool place

Reported Leeds United target Danny Ings has spoken about his future after a difficult time with Liverpool.

Danny Ings has told The Times that he feels that he still has plenty to offer at Liverpool despite the torrid time that he has endured with injury since arriving at Anfield.

Ings joined the Reds from Burnley in 2015, but only made a handful of Premier League appearances for the Merseyside outfit before injury struck, and has not played a single game in the top flight since the start of the 2016/17 season.

He is now back in contention to play for Jurgen Klopp’s side but is currently having to settle for minutes in the under-23s. But while some may expect the former Clarets man to be frustrated and considering his future at the club, Ings insisted that he sees his future at Liverpool.

“People from the outside looking in will probably have the assumption, ‘Oh, he’s the forgotten man,’ but it has not crossed my mind at all. I still believe in myself. I still believe I can play in this team,” he told The Times.

“When you are at a club like Liverpool, it is not a club that you want to walk away from. It would grate on me for the rest of my career, and the rest of my life, if I had not done everything to give it my all. I still feel like I have a big part to play in this football club.”

Ings’ comments may arguably be of interest to Leeds, with ESPN recently reporting that the Championship side are keen on signing the 25-year-old in January as they look to keep themselves in the promotion picture in the second tier.

Ings’ desire to stay at Liverpool certainly suggests a potential move to Elland Road would be off the table, but perhaps Leeds should not give up entirely on trying to bring the forward to the club in January in some capacity.

It certainly appears that he has no desire to make a permanent switch, but perhaps if he is still struggling to break into Klopp’s side by the time the window opens, then maybe he would consider a loan move to try and get some competitive football under his belt – though it must be mentioned that The Times reports that he rejected Newcastle and Bournemouth, who made loan bids in the summer.

Certainly, if Ings has not ended his long wait for a Premier League appearance by the time January arrives, Leeds should think about making a loan bid in the hope that the Reds and the player himself feel slightly differently about what the best path for him to get back into the Liverpool first-team actually is.
