Burnley chasing first win over Blackpool since April 2014 Championship clash

Blackpool travel to Lancashire sitting ninth in the standings after two wins and two defeats from their opening four fixtures. But the Seasiders have lost in their last two meetings with the Clarets, with the Turf Moor outfit doing the double in the 2013/14 Championship term.

Burnley beat Saturday’s opponent 2-1 at Turf Moor, before taking a 1-0 win at Blackpool in April 2014. Michael Kightly offered the only goal of the Bloomfield Road affair in the 49th-minute, to help edge Sean Dyche’s side closer to gaining promotion to the Premier League.
The win put Burnley within a game of securing one of the two automatic places, alongside Leicester City. The second-tier contest also saw Blackpool fans throw tennis balls onto the pitch in protest against their former chairman Karl Oyston, two points from the drop zone.
Blackpool would go on to avoid relegation, whilst Burnley followed Leicester into the top-flight. But the Seasiders’ relegation the following season ensured they would not meet the Clarets again in 2015/16, before Burnley enjoyed a six-year spell as a Premier League side.
Tomasson will now hope to follow in Dyche’s footsteps and claim a Burnley win at home to Blackpool on Saturday. So, with that in mind, who started in the Clarets’ win in April 2014?

Tom Heaton (GK): Man Utd man had quiet game in last Burnley win vs Blackpool
Tom Heaton had a quiet afternoon the last time Burnley beat Blackpool, during a game of few chances. The goalkeeper would end the 2013/14 Championship season with 19 clean sheets from 46 games. He also boasted 65 in 200 games before leaving Turf Moor in 2019.
Aston Villa signed Heaton from Burnley for £8m upon their return to the Premier League. But the 36-year-old only kept four clean sheets over a mere 20 appearances before leaving Villa Park in 2021. Manchester United signed him, but they have only afforded one game so far.
Kieran Trippier (RB): Now Newcastle defender provided key block vs Blackpool
Kieran Trippier provided a key block the last time Burnley beat Blackpool, having offered a vital goal-denying block. Andy Halliday almost claimed the Seasiders a point in injury-time, but saw Trippier clear his volley off the line with just seconds left on the clock to lose 1-0.
Eddie Howe signed Trippier off Manchester City in 2012, and the right-back stayed at Turf Moor until Tottenham Hotspur paid his £3.5m release clause in 2015. Four years in north London preceded two-and-a-half at Atletico Madrid before joining Newcastle this January.

Michael Duff (CB): Former Burnley defender now Barnsley manager
Michael Duff spent 12 years at Burnley as a player, from joining in 2004 from Cheltenham Town up to his retirement in 2016. The centre-half made 382 appearances for the Clarets across all competitions before stepping into coaching with their Under-21 side in 2017/18.
He would then land his first senior management position with Cheltenham in 2018, and he led the Robins during 202 games over four years. But the 44-year-old left the Jonny-Rocks Stadium this June to take over Barnsley, where he has won two of four League One games.
Jason Shackell (CB): Captained Burnley to last win over Blackpool
Jason Shackell captained Burnley in their last win over Blackpool back in 2014 during the 38-year-old’s three-year Turf Moor stint. The Clarets signed the defender off Derby County in 2012, before Shackell returned to Pride Park in 2015 on the back of 136 Burnley outings.
His career also featured stints with his academy side Norwich City, before Wolverhampton Wanderers, Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley, Millwall and Lincoln City up to retiring come 2020.
Ben Mee (LB): Brentford signed defender after Burnley release in 2022
Ben Mee saw his Burnley adventure end in June with the former Clarets captain’s contract expiring. He first moved to Turf Moor on loan from Manchester City in 2011 before making the deal permanent in 2012. The defender featured in 376 fixtures up to joining Brentford.

Scott Arfield (RM): Rangers midfielder started last Burnley win over Blackpool
Scott Arfield opened the action on the right-flank the last time Burnley beat Blackpool. The 19-cap Canada international had moved to Turf Moor ahead of the 2013/14 campaign, and stayed until a transfer to Rangers in 2018 – where he remains still – after 193 appearances.
David Jones (CM): Former Clarets midfielder now a free agent after Wrexham release
David Jones is now a free agent at 37 years old, after Wrexham released the midfielder this summer. He joined the non-league team last year after 18 months without a club following a stint with Oldham Athletic, who moved after his release from Sheffield Wednesday in 2020.
Three years at Turf Moor preceded his spell at Hillsborough, and also returned Jones’ most appearances with one club. He featured 131 times for three goals and 12 assists across all competitions with Burnley. Almost double the 77 outings he had for Wolves from 2008-11.
Dean Marney (CM): Assisted only goal in last Burnley win over Blackpool
Dean Marney assisted the only goal the last time Burnley beat Blackpool with one of 17 he offered the Clarets. The midfielder also found the back of the net 10 times over 221 games at Turf Moor between 2010 and 2018 – the most games he had with any club in his career.

Only the 38-year-old’s career at Hull City also included a triple-digit haul of appearances on 138. He struggled to settle in the Tottenham first-team, in loans to Swindon Town, Queens Park Rangers, Gillingham and Norwich, or at Fleetwood Town before retiring in July 2020.
Michael Kightly (LM): Scored the only goal in last Burnley win over Blackpool
Kightly scored a wonderful goal to break the deadlock with what would be the only goal in Burnley’s last win over Blackpool. The midfielder produced a tidy one-two with Marney on the edge of the box, before curling the ball home beyond Matt Gilks in the Seasiders’ goal.
The effort was one of six that the 36-year-old scored over 88 appearances at Burnley from 2013 to 2017. He also laid on 11 assists, between loans to Stoke City and Burton Albion up to joining Southend United. A stint at Rushall followed in 2020/21, and is still a free agent.
Ashley Barnes (ST): Only surviving member of 2014 Burnley win vs Blackpool
Ashley Barnes is the only surviving member of the Burnley side that beat Blackpool in April 2014. The Bath-born striker had only moved to Turf Moor from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2014, and has gone on to hit 47 goals and 10 assists over his 252 games so far.

Danny Ings (ST): Aston Villa forward almost scored past lively Matt Gilks
Danny Ings came close to breaking the deadlock just before half-time the last time Burnley beat Blackpool. The striker tried his luck from the edge of the area, but could only direct a shot straight at Gilks – who enjoyed a strong showing to frustrate a dominant Clarets side.
The 30-year-old still held an influential role in Burnley securing promotion in 2013/14 with 21 goals in 40 games. Those efforts almost account for half of his Clarets tally of 43, plus 14 assists, over 130 games between joining from Bournemouth in 2011 to departing in 2015.
Liverpool signed Ings after Burnley’s relegation as his contract lapsed, but the Professional Football Compensation Committee made them pay £6.5m, rising to £8m. The forward later joined Southampton for £20m in 2019, before Aston Villa paid £25m, up to £30m, in 2021.
