Jack Marriott has scored three goals in his first three Derby County starts in the league.

Frank Lampard manager of Derby County looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Derby County and Norwich City at Pride Park Stadium on October 3, 2018 in Derby, England.

Danny Higgonbotham has suggested to Sky Sports that Derby County boss Frank Lampard told him that Jack Marriott was held in reserve after signing because he had to get used to playing as a lone striker.

Marriott has bagged three goals in three Championship starts for the Rams, but the summer signing made a slow start to life.

Lampard favoured other options in Marriott’s initial few weeks at the club, and Higginbotham got some inside information on why that was last night.

The co-commentator said: “I asked him whether it was just a case of being patient with him and he said that he had to get use to him playing in a one rather than a two up-front.”

Derby picked up their most impressive result of the campaign yesterday, as they battered West Brom 4-1 at the Hawthorns.

Marriott opened the scoring for Lampard’s men, who ran riot against the division’s top scorers.

Derby added further goals through Tom Lawrence, Harry Wilson and Scott Malone as they dominated proceedings.

The Rams are now in fifth place in the Championship table, and they have impressed so far this term.
