West Ham United were reportedly interested in signing Danny Drinkwater in the summer.

It was reported by the Daily Mirror in the summer that West Ham were eyeing a move for Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater one year after the midfielder joined the Blues in a £35 million deal – fee also reported by the Daily Mirror.
Drinkwater is yet to feature in a competitive game this season and has only made the bench on one occasion. The Telegraph reports that Chelsea were ready to sell the former Leicester City ace in the summer, but he decided to try and fight for his place.
He remains available ahead of the January and summer windows, according to the Telegraph, and with the writing seemingly on the wall, he may be hoping that the Hammers renew their interest.
For a while, it appeared that it was going to be West Ham who rued the fact that they did not sign Drinkwater in the summer. But given the events of recent weeks, it would be no surprise if it was the midfielder who was kicking himself over a deal not happening.
After a difficult start to life under Maurizio Sarri, Drinkwater may have held out some hope that he could force his way into the picture. And if not, the Hammers’ dreadful start may leave the door open for fresh interest in January.

But while Drinkwater’s situation has not improved, West Ham’s certainly has. The Irons have taken seven points from their last three games, beating both Everton and Manchester United, and drawing with Drinkwater’s side at the London Stadium.
A key reason for their success has been the incredible performances of both Mark Noble and Declan Rice in the middle of the park. The pair are forming a formidable partnership and it is having a remarkable impact on the balance of the side.

If the pair keep this up over the coming weeks, West Ham simply do not need to pursue a deal for Drinkwater in a future window. The costs of the move would arguably not be worthwhile for the Hammers who appear to have found something special in Noble and Rice.
And if that proves to be the case, Drinkwater may be left to rue seemingly turning the Hammers down in the summer as, with their large summer spend, they were perhaps one of the more realistic options that may have potentially looked to come and rescue him from Stamford Bridge.
