Danielle Collins and Lindsay Davenport have speculated over whether Serena Williams could return to tennis.
Williams retired from tennis in 2022, playing the final match of her career at the US Open.
While it was assumed that she had officially hung up her rackets, speculation around a potential Williams return began after she re-entered the drug testing pool.
While Williams has denied these rumours, both Collins and Davenport believe there may be more to it.

Lindsay Davenport and Danielle Collins say if they think Serena Williams will return to tennis
Collins is still an active tennis player, but after dealing with a back injury last year she has made the decision to miss the start of the 2026 season.
While she is not on court right now, former Australian Open finalist Collins is still keeping an eye on the tennis world and made an appearance on Tennis Channel.
In this appearance, both Collins and three-time Grand Slam champion Davenport discussed the Williams rumours.
Both admitted that they were not convinced by Williams’ denials, and Collins even requested the 23-time Grand Slam champion to play doubles with her.
Davenport: You only pull your name out of that list, you don’t want people knocking on your door at anytime unless you’re really serious about it. Probably was a surprise, she wanted to break it herself is my guess about it.
Collins: Yeah, I can’t imagine her just wanting to sign up for drug tests just for the sake of it.
Davenport: Keep in mind you have to give one hour out of every day that they can come and knock on your door, 6am or whatever time. So, mother of two, business woman, you’re not willingly entering that unless you’re serious.
Collins: I’m kind of hoping she’s going to come back. I never got the chance to play doubles with Serena, so Serena if you’re watching this girl I’m here for your return. We can make a debut together and we can hit the karaoke bar after.
What happened when Danielle Collins played Serena Williams?
Although she has never played doubles with the former world number one, Collins has played against Williams before.
Collins played against her compatriot twice in 2021, losing both meetings against Williams.
This includes a meeting at the French Open, which was Williams’ final ever appearance at the clay court major.
| Year | Tournament | Result |
| 2021 | Yarra Valley Classic (QF) | Williams beat Collins, 6-2 4-6 10-6 |
| 2021 | French Open (R32) | Williams beat Collins, 6-4 6-4 |
It is unclear as to whether Serena Williams will actually return to tennis, with it being widely speculated that she could come back to play doubles with Venus at the US Open.
While she may not get her dream doubles match with Serena, Collins is expected to return to tennis for the second half of the 2026 season.
