Speaking on the Beautiful Game Podcast, Daniel Sturridge has shared a text message conversation he had with Liverpool director Mike Gordon 20 minutes before the Reds were confirmed as league champions.
Sturridge clearly still has a strong affinity with the Anfield outfit, claiming that he text everybody as the Manchester City vs Chelsea game ticked towards the 90th minute, confirming the Reds’ first league title in 30 years.
Gordon was one of the first people Sturridge messaged as the game was coming towards an end, but the director was unwilling to accept that the Reds were going to win the league until it was mathematically confirmed.
“I text everybody, I text the manager, I text Mike Gordon, I text everybody,” Sturridge said about the night Liverpool won the league.
“I text Mike before the whistle even blew at the game. Imagine, I text him about 20 minutes before the game finished and I was like ‘Mike, congratulations on winning the Premier League’
“He was like ‘Daniel, I’m still nervous’, and I said ‘Mike, we’re 20 points in front, the league is sewn up now, you don’t need to worry about that’.”

It’s really heart-warming to hear that Sturridge was texting his former teammates and colleagues just before they won the league, but we can’t help but laugh at Mike Gordon’s reaction.
Liverpool pretty much had the league sewn up in January last year, such was their dominance over every other team in the league, but despite being over 20 points clear and just minutes away from it being mathematically confirmed, Gordon still felt nervous.
Perhaps that’s just indicative of the 30 years of hurt at Anfield that led to some supporters believing it was never going to happen, but as we all know, the Reds finally ended their long drought and the rest is history.
