Southampton set to battle Tottenham for Ryan Sessegnon.

Southampton are set to battle Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of Fulham wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon, according to The Telegraph.

The Saints are set for a spending spree after selling Virgil van Dijk for £75 million.

Sessegnon has been strongly linked with a move from Fulham to Tottenham, with The Mirror reporting Spurs desire to sign the left-back.

Tottenham were linked with the defender back in the summer, and Southampton could now make chairman Daniel Levy pay not pushing through a deal, after failing with a bid in August.

The Saints believe they can sell the move to Sessegnon by demonstrating they are a perfect ‘stepping stone’ club for the teenager, and can allow him to develop.

Current left-back Ryan Bertrand is creating interest of his own and Southampton are also considering offering Matt Targett to Fulham as part of a potential swap deal.

They would also reportedly throw in a sell-on clause, allowing Fulham to profit from a future sale.

Tottenham’s long-term interest could yet see them win the race for the England youth international, but Southampton appear to be very credible rivals for his signature, and have a sudden urgency to start adding to their squad.
