Tottenham Hotspur have been eyeing up Everton midfielder Ross Barkley for much of the transfer window to date.

According to The Daily Mirror, Manchester United are set to wait until the end of the transfer window before bidding for Everton’s Ross Barkley, and that could scupper Daniel Levy’s plan at Tottenham Hotspur.

Sky Sports have suggested that Tottenham were hoping to wait to sign Barkley, in the expectation that Everton would lower their asking price as the pressure to sell increased.

Barkley’s contract expires at Goodison Park next summer, and Everton know that this summer could be their last chance to seal a deal for the attacking midfielder.

There has not been much interest in Barkley yet, with Everton currently asking for £50 million, the Mail report.

But Spurs were confident that this asking price would be reduced nearer to deadline day, when they were planning to strike.

However, with United also waiting, Spurs’ plan could be put into jeopardy.

Tottenham look set to have to enter a bidding war with the Red Devils, and that wouldn’t be wise for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

If Spurs and United are both interested, then it is unlikely that Everton will have to accept a reduced price for Barkley after all.

And it means that Spurs may as well move now for Barkley, as Levy’s waiting game no longer makes sense.
