Tottenham need a centre-back this summer, that much is seemingly very obvious.
The London outfit have struggled to keep the ball out of the net this season, and the constant chopping and changing of their centre-back pairing perfectly highlights the ongoing problems in that position.
Jose Mourinho isn’t blind to this problem either, and he’s reportedly asked for a very specific type of defender, that being a left-footed centre-back with pace.
Unfortunately, those are hard to come by, and while that’s what Jose Mourinho thinks he needs, Daniel Levy is chasing a player who doesn’t fit that profile in the shape of Ezri Konsa.
Now, we’re not arguing that Konsa isn’t a good player, he’s shown this season through his performances for Aston Villa that he’s a quality defender, and he’s even been described as ‘unreal’ by Gabriel Agbonlahor.
However, it’s not what Mourinho is after, Konsa is a right-footer, and while he isn’t the slowest centre-back in the league by any means, you wouldn’t necessarily describe him as pacey.
If Konsa came in there’s every chance he’d do a great job, but that left-sided centre-back spot would still desperately need filling, and that’s where the problem would lie.
Konsa plays on the right, alongside a left-footer in the shape of Tyrone Mings, and that dynamic clearly works, hence why most top clubs in the world do employ at least one left-footed centre-back.
Mourinho knows that Spurs need a player in that mould, Duncan Castles has been reporting that for months, but for some reason Levy doesn’t seem to be listening to those pleas.
Would Konsa be a good signing for Spurs? Potentially, but the fact of the matter is that he doesn’t fit the profile of defender Tottenham need right now, and if he’s the only centre-half signed this summer, Levy will have sold Mourinho short.
