According to a SportBild, Tottenham are interested in signing Jerome Boateng on a free transfer this summer.
It’s no secret that the London club are desperate for a new centre-half, with Football London reporting that they want a very specific type of defender, someone who can act as a leader at the back.
Boateng certainly has the ability to be a defensive leader. He’s captained his country in the past, and while he hasn’t been bestowed the honour of being Bayern Munich’s skipper, he’s certainly an important figure in Munich.
Spurs need this sort of experienced leader at the back as that’s been something they’ve lacked since the departure of Jan Vertonghen last summer.
This season, Spurs have looked towards more inexperienced options at the back, but Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Joe Rodon have struggled to step up at times this term.

Vertonghen brought a great combination of talent and experience at Spurs, he knew exactly what he was doing and he looked to be a manager’s dream, and there’s no reason Boateng can’t come in and fill that role.
Boateng is one of the most decorate centre-halves of his generation, and while he isn’t the player he once was, there are few players with his level of experience and ability to lead a defence.
Of course, whether or not Daniel Levy gets this deal done remains to be seen, but if Boateng does come in he could finally act as Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen replacement.
Fingers crossed this is a move that Spurs can finalise at the end of the season.
