Tottenham Hotspur have done some remarkable business so far this summer.

Indeed, Spurs have been one of the most active clubs in the Premier League since the transfer window opened, bringing in no fewer than five new players.

Tottenham have certainly strengthened in a number of key areas, and they’ve landed a few of their top targets, but one player who is yet to join the north London outfit is Djed Spence.

Spence has been linked to Tottenham for absolutely ages now. Every week we hear that a deal is edging closer and closer, but, as of yet, there’s been no sign of the Middlesbrough man in north London.

So, why is this deal dragging on for so long? Well, a report from Sky Sports last month may hold the answer.

Indeed, according to Sky, this is one deal this summer that Fabio Paratici isn’t actually working on as Daniel Levy is reportedly leading the negotiations on this front.

Levy has been in this position on numerous occasions in the past, and as Spurs fans ought to know, he can be one of the toughest negotiators in the game.

Of course, that can work well in certain situations. Last summer he refused to budge on Harry Kane’s asking price, and if he does get the Spence deal over the line, he’ll probably get the England U21 international for a decent price, but his stubbornness on this deal is beginning to grow increasingly frustrating.

Tottenham had hoped to have Spence through the door by the time they headed to South Korea, but that hasn’t gone to plan, and as the days go by, Spence’s adaptation window at Spurs gets shorter and shorter.

With Antonio Conte’s pre-season training being notoriously gruelling, Spence’s late arrival could see him fall behind some of his teammates’ fitness levels, and that’s down to Levy who has reportedly been dragging his heels on this deal.

It’s no coincidence that Paratici’s business has been swift and succinct. He landed five players by the first week of July, but the one deal that Levy has been working on still hasn’t been done.

This situation just goes to show why Paratici was brought in last summer, and while Levy is a great asset in certain circumstances, the chairman may be best off leaving all incoming transfer business to his Sporting Director.
