Paul Merson has said on Sky Sports News (5:18pm, September 25, 2021) that Leeds United winger Daniel James did not play well against West Ham United at the weekend.

Leeds suffered a 2-1 defeat to West Ham at Elland Road in the Premier League on Saturday.

James, signed from Manchester United in the summer transfer window, started the match for Leeds.

However, head coach Marcelo Bielsa decided to take off the Wales international winger at half time.

Jack Harrison came on in the place of the 23-year-old.

Leeds were leading 1-0 at that stage.

The West Yorkshire club went on to lose the match 2-1.

Former Arsenal and Aston Villa star Merson was following the match for Sky Sports, and he did not think that James played well, saying that he was “disappointing”.

The Englishman, though, was impressed by the performance of Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Merson said about James on Sky Sports News (5:18pm, September 25, 2021): “Not really, no. Disappointing. He was disappointing. He came off at half time.”

The Sky Sports pundit added about Meslier: “He made some great saves.”

Disappointing from Daniel James

James has not been great for Leeds so far this season and does need to step up his game.

Against West Ham at the weekend, the winger failed to make any impact whatsoever and could not really be a problem for the Hammers.

The Welshman took one shot which was not on target, had a pass accuracy of 80%, took eight touches, and made one tackle.

The winger did not have a pre-season with Leeds, and it does take a while for players to get used to Bielsa’s system.
