Daniel Cormier had his doubts about whether Khamzat Chimaev would be ready for his first UFC title shot.
The undefeated Russian is set to face middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis at UFC 319 on August 16th.
Chimaev’s path to the top of MMA has been slowed by injuries, illness and visa issues.
Cormier grew concerned that ‘Borz’ might have to pull out again after a troubling phone call he got in June.
Daniel Cormier shares details of troubling call about Khamzat Chimaev

The former two-division champion, now working as a commentator, recently joined Chael Sonnen to discuss UFC 319.
Cormier alluded to problems within Chimaev’s camp during their “Good Guy/Bad Guy” podcast.
According to him, the concerns were serious enough that he was asked who should step in against Du Plessis if Chimaev could not fight.
“There were so many questions in regards to him even making this fight,” Cormier said.
“I can say this now, we are a week from the fight. Two months ago, I got a call saying Khamzat was going to be out. Who do you think should fight Dricus?
“Should it be the kid from France, [Nassourdine] Imavov? Or should it be [Caio] Borralho?
“And it wasn’t. It was always going to be Khamzat. He was going to make that walk.”
Khamzat Chimaev spoke out about UFC 319 precautions
Chimaev has taken extra precautions for UFC 319, limiting outside interactions to avoid illness and maintain focus on training for his title shot.
Speaking to ESPN MMA, ‘Borz’ explained: “I have to be ready, don’t get sick.
“That’s why I’m just saying to the boys, ‘If we go to the mall, if somebody, [a] sick fan comes, maybe we get that sickness.’
“So, I have to be careful for that.”
