Leeds United will have been hoping to have celebrated promotion by now, but the global pandemic means they’re left waiting.
The Whites sit in the automatic promotion places as things stand, but a ball hasn’t been kicked for over two months now.
The hope is that football will return soon under safe conditions, and Leeds will then hope to go up. If the season is settled early, the Whites have a strong claim to be promoted.
With that in mind, one recent report suggested that Marcelo Bielsa and co have already lined up one signing whether or not they reach the Premier League.
The Daily Star claim that Leeds want to sign Daniel Ayala, whether they’re in the Premier League or the Championship.
The centre back is out of contract this summer, meaning he can join Leeds for free. An experienced performer in English football, Ayala would help Leeds in a key position given that Ben White will return to Brighton this summer.
The uncertainty over the season means it’s hard for Ayala to know what the future holds right now. Still, he and his wife have spent lockdown in the south, moving away from the North East.

Now, Ayala’s wife Hannah has addressed questions about that in an Instagram session, as quoted by the Teesside Gazette. She notes that the move down south wasn’t anything related to Ayala’s contract situation, and they still don’t know where he will be playing next season.
“I knew this question would be the most asked, but at the moment we don’t know anything yet. It’s no secret Daniel’s contract ends this summer, but that wasn’t the reason we left our house up north.
“We had outgrown the house so we decided we would come back down south and look for a new house maybe closer to Yarm if Daniel gets a new contract,” she said.
The comments show that Ayala is open to staying at Middlesbrough, but Leeds will be hard to reject if they do make an offer for him this summer.
