Daniel Andersson and Oscar Lewicki comment on Celtic’s Mikael Lustig

Mikael Lustig’s Celtic future appears to be up in the air with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

Malmo sporting director Daniel Andersson has responded to reports that the club have made a lucrative offer for Celtic defender Mikael Lustig, while Sweden teammate Oscar Lewicki has heaped praise on the right-back, in comments reported by The Scottish Sun.

Lustig’s future appears to be up in the air. The Hoops stalwart is out of contract at the end of the season and has fallen down the pecking order at Parkhead with Jeremy Toljan proving to be an inspired loan addition for Brendan Rodgers’s side.

Fotboll Direkt reported at the weekend that Malmo were ready to take on AIK for the 32-year-old’s signature, and had actually made a much better offer than their rivals.

But Andersson has seemingly looked to dampen talk of a potential move for the Bhoys ace by insisting that he will not comment on whether an offer has been made.

“I do not usually comment on players who do not belong to Malmo and I won’t do it this this time either,” he said, as reported by The Scottish Sun. “You are free to speculate, but Mikael is a Celtic player and I don’t think it is respectful to talk about another club’s player.”

Andersson may not be ready to confirm or deny whether an offer has been made to Lustig, but Lewicki certainly gave off the impression that he would love to see the full-back join him at Malmo.

“Mikael is a great player and a very funny guy,” he said. “I got to know him in the national team and he’s great. He has a lot of humour about him and he’s a really good player.”

Unfortunately for Lustig, his departure would seemingly be met with a mixed response amongst the Celtic fans, at best. He has been a fantastic servant for the Hoops, but his form has tailed off over the last year.

And if Celtic have a chance of keeping Toljan beyond his initial loan spell, then losing Lustig will probably not hurt Rodgers’s side too much – in terms of their fortunes on the pitch, at least.
