Former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse has announced his retirement from football.

Former Premier League star Djibril Cisse announced his retirement from football this yesterday.

The BBC reported that the striker first called it quits last year after suffering an injury before attempting to get fit again, but failed to win a contract with former club Auxerre.

Cisse, 35, ends a storied career which saw him play for QPR, Sunderland, and most notably Liverpool.

The Reds paid big money to sign him from Auxerre in 2004, where his prolific form saw him touted as France’s successor to Thierry Henry.

A devastating injury at Liverpool proved damaging to his development, and he would suffer another leg break two years later.

His most memorable Liverpool contribution was a goal in the 2006 FA Cup Final against West Ham, his final game during a two year spell at Anfield.

Former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger sent him a message on twitter yesterday expressing his best wishes for the future, still holding him in high regard.

Cisse has not played in England since his 2012/13 spell with QPR, and his hopes of a comeback to the top level may have purely been a pipe dream.

He was a player with potential to be one of the stars of the Premier League in the mid-2000s, and he and Liverpool fans may only wonder what could have been if it had not been for injury.
