Adam Hayton completed a permanent move from Tottenham to League One side Barnsley on deadline day, penning a contract until June 2025 – and duo Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett reacted to his touching Spurs tribute on Instagram.

Hayton, 18, has been a regular for Tottenham’s Under-18 side in the last couple of seasons. This season, though, he has only been used three times. Once in the EFL Trophy, and twice in the UEFA Youth League, in both Frankfurt fixtures.

But the Luton-born goalkeeper has chosen to leave Spurs. Luca Gunter is the goalkeeper showing most promise in the youth sides, while Aaron Maguire and Josh Keeley are options. Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman are still at Spurs.

Of course, all of which are behind Fraser Forster and then, Hugo Lloris. Hayton has decided to end his Tottenham spell. Having been at Spurs for 11 years, since he was just seven, Hayton has left to pursue a career at new club Barnsley.

It is a brilliant move for Hayton. Given he has only played once for Tottenham’s second string in the EFL Trophy, he now has the chance to break in at a League One club. The Yorkshire side are in a good position in England’s third tier.

They sit in sixth place, five points clear of seventh-placed Peterborough. They have a real chance of qualifying for the play-offs, and to fight for promotion to the Championship. Now of course, Hayton is not going to start immediately.

But there is a chance. Harry Isted is only on loan from Luton – and he is yet to play. New Zealand man Jamie Searle is also a rookie, playing just once for the club. Number one Bradley Collins will see his contract end in 18 months.

So, Hayton has a chance of impressing enough to break into the side in the next few months or next season. In the mean time, Tottenham duo Devine and Scarlett responded to the news that Hayton has left on a permanent basis.
