Dana White has offered up his own explanation for why Jack Della Maddalena was met with boos before UFC 322.
The welterweight champion is set to defend his title against Islam Makhachev on Saturday night.
Going into the fight, Della Maddalena, an underdog known for his striking ability, was expected to get a warm reception from the New York crowd at Thursday’s press conference.
But instead, he found himself drowned out by boos every time he tried to speak. The Aussie didn’t seem fazed. When asked how the reaction felt by TNT Sports, he replied: “It was fine. I didn’t care.”

Dana White thinks Islam Makhachev’s popularity and religious background have played a big part in how the New York crowd sees him. Makhachev has built a strong fanbase over the years, helped by his openness about his faith.
“Obviously, there’s a huge Muslim community out here in New York,” White told FOX Sports Australia.
White also pointed to Makhachev’s success and reputation as key reasons behind his strong support. “Also, you have to look at the fact that Islam is looked at as one of the best ever.
“Islam has done so much. And the whole Dagestan, and Khabib [Nurmagomedov], and the camp that they have out there. “Like I said, it’s basically like a Muslim country right now, so I’m sure Jack is feeling it.”

Jack Della Maddalena didn’t seem bothered by the hostile crowd at the press conference — in fact, he seemed to thrive on it.
When asked about being booed, he smiled and said: “I love it.” “I love this s—,” he added. Della Maddalena went on to say: “This is the atmosphere I’m looking forward to on Saturday night. ” He finished with confidence: “It’s going to be a good night.”
