Former Everton midfielder Dan Gosling is hoping his current employers Bournemouth can be a Capital One Cup ‘banana skin’ for Liverpool.
Dan Gosling will find himself facing familiar foes on Wednesday when Bournemouth take to the field in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals.
The Cherries have been handed a plum tie against Premier League giants Liverpool, and it could be a good time for Eddie Howe’s men to be running into the Reds.
It has been a tough couple of weeks for the Anfield outfit, with Champions League elimination followed by a 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Manchester United.
Former Everton midfielder Gosling acknowledges that Liverpool are going through a ‘sticky patch’ and hopes that will work in favour of his current employers.
Bournemouth top the Championship table at present and a meeting with a top-flight heavyweight will offer some indication as to how close they are to being ready to take a step up in class.
Gosling said: “It’s a glamour tie for us and everybody connected with Bournemouth was thrilled when the draw came out. It’s obviously a potential banana skin for Liverpool.
“I wouldn’t say Liverpool are underdogs. Everyone knows they’re going through a sticky patch, they’ve had a few bad results, but against Manchester United they were very unlucky.”
Bournemouth head into the midweek fixture buoyed by a 12-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
Their last defeat came way back at the end of September, with two-and-a-half months negotiated without a wobble.
They have already claimed the top-flight scalp of West Bromwich Albion in the League Cup this season, and pushed Liverpool close when they met in the FA Cup back in January – with the Reds leaving the south coast with a 2-0 win.
