Dan Burn has stated ‘I was just having a little play’ when he responded to ripping Tyrone Mings’ shirt during Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, as he told Sky Sports.

It was an eventful debut for the boyhood Newcastle fan because, not only did he help his side to a deserved three points, but also a clean sheet against free-scoring Aston Villa.

It was a cagey affair at St James’ Park, with no real rhythm to the game and Newcastle using the home crowd to their advantage to drive them forward.

At one point during the match, both Burn and Mings seemingly had a coming together off the ball, with the former Brighton man taking a chunk of Mings’ shirt.

After the game, Burn shared that he enjoyed his battle with the Villa captain and it was nothing serious between the two.

“I was just having a little play,” said Burn. “I have had a few good battles with Mings over the years and I enjoy it.

“Second half was a little stop-start. There were too many free-kicks. But it doesn’t matter because we got the win.”

On his debut for Newcastle, playing for his boyhood club, it was a memorable afternoon for Burn.

It could be argued that he was the best player on the pitch because he produced a commanding and no-nonsense display at the back.

Whilst Villa didn’t have too much to shout about, the only one who could probably hold his head up high was Mings because he would be the only one who would receive a plus score for his performance.

Either way, it’s three wins on the bounce for Newcastle and those worries of dropping down to England’s second-tier are starting to fade away.
