Dan Burn has told Newcastle’s official website that the morale of the Toon squad has been “really surprising” under Eddie Howe, since he joined the club from Brighton. Newcastle’s unbeaten run came to an end on Sunday.
Burn, 29, has been in stunning form for Newcastle since returning to the side he left as a boy. He came into Sunday’s clash against Chelsea, having picked up 13 points in the Premier League from his five league games.
Newcastle looked as though they were going to secure a brilliant point at Stamford Bridge, stretching their unbeaten run to 10 Premier League games. But it was Kai Havertz that scored in the 89th minute for Chelsea.
Havertz was arguably, lucky to be on the pitch after an elbow on Burn – which saw the German yellow-carded. Burn, sporting an egg on the side of his head, spoke to media after the match – about the squad’s morale.
“I’ve said, since I’ve came in, I’ve been ‘really surprised’ at the morale of the group. I thought it was going to be low when I came in. Ever since my first session I’ve seen how positive the lads are.
“We fight for eachother, not just the 11 who start – but the lads on the bench, those who aren’t even getting on,” Burn told Newcastle’s official website, as the Toon continue to climb the Premier League table.
Burn on Newcastle morale: Howe deserves enormous credit
Howe has taken a side devoid of confidence, devoid of belief, that looked as though relegation was a formality – to relative safety already. But that is not just a change of tactics, or the near £100million spent in January.
It is the belief he has re-installed, the confidence that Howe has given his players and the improvement of some under-performing stars previously. Ryan Fraser, Joelinton, Jonjo Shelvey, Fabian Schar and more are examples.
