Rebuilding after the departure of a long-serving manager is a challenge for many clubs, but few have seen a downfall quite like Manchester United.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s first league title in 1992/93 Manchester United had never finished below third place, collecting an incredible 13 more titles until the Scotsman retired in 2013.

Fast forward to 2025, the Red Devils look set to achieve their lowest-ever Premier League finish as they sit 14th, their lowest since 1973/74, when they got relegated.

Man United’s embarrassing win/loss ratio

Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat against Newcastle United means they have now matched their record for most Premier League defeats in a season.

They have won just ten and lost an incredible fourteen games already this season, with six more games still to play.

It was also their 115th defeat in 450 Premier League matches since the retirement of the great Sir Alex.

For context, Sir Alex, in his 26-year tenure, lost 114 in 810.

Ruben Amorim’s tough Old Trafford start

After 21 games, Ruben Amorim has the worst win percentage of any Manchester United manager in the Premier League – according to StatMuse.

Having won on just six occasions, the Portuguese has won 28.6% of his games, compared to the 51.8% of his predecessor Erik Ten Hag.

Manager (Since Sir Alex Ferguson)Win Percentage
Jose Mourinho53.8%
Erik Ten Hag51.8%
Ole Gunnar Solskjær51.4%
Louis Van Gaal 51.3%
Ralf Rangnick41.7%
Ruben Amorim 28.6%

Damning figures for Manchester United supporters, however, they will be hopeful the Red Devils can start their huge rebuild in the summer.

Man United have been linked with Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton, attempting to bolster their back three.

The attack has been an issue this season, as Matheus Cunha has been targeted by Manchester United to help solve their goal-scoring woes.

Can the Portuguese guide the Red Devils back to their glory days? Or will he join a long list of Manchester United managers, to have tried, and failed?
