Shane Lowry had a rough end to his week at the Dubai Invitational.

He played well throughout most of the tournament, but he left the course on Sunday feeling far from satisfied with how things finished.

Speaking earlier in the week, Lowry said he enjoyed being part of the event, though it is hard to imagine he felt good about how it all wrapped up.

It all went wrong for him on his final hole at Dubai Creek Resort.

The 38-year-old was ahead by one stroke when he pulled his approach into the back-left bunker.

A poor shot from there ended up in the water, leading to a double bogey. Nacho Elvira finished strong at 10-under-par to take home the trophy.

Sky Sports commentator Dame Laura Davies was left stunned as Lowry’s hopes slipped away at the end of the Dubai Invitational.

The Irishman had been in a strong position before his double-bogey on the final hole, and Davies admitted she did not see it coming.

Speaking on Sky Sports, she shared her thoughts on what might have led to the costly mistake.

“Well, when I left the compound to come down here, he hit a perfect tee shot, so in my mind I’m thinking, ‘Oh, Shane is going to win’,“ Davies began by saying.

“Yeah, he was in a good spot. I don’t know, maybe adrenaline and he’s just blown it.

“He got a big bounce because he pitched it up there pin-high. He pitched it just a bit too far.

“The ideal spot there was 20 foot short to leave yourself that uphill putt.

“And I know he’s made a mess of the bunker shot, but that was so difficult, all downhill all the way to the hole, and we know that is really difficult.

“When he first hit it, I thought it was alright, but it just went on and on and into the water.

“And he racked up a double and he will be angry more than anything.”

Concerns grow for Shane Lowry

Lowry will be fuming with himself for the careless double bogey that cost him on the final hole in Dubai.

As Davies pointed out, he should never have gone near the back fringe to begin with – it was a clear lapse in judgment from the Irishman.

It has now been quite a stretch since Lowry last picked up an individual win, dating back to the BMW PGA Championship in September 2022.

This season marks his fourth straight without a solo victory, and that has got to be weighing on his mind by now.

The longer this drought goes on and the more chances that slip away, you start wondering how much it might get inside his head. That can be a tough spiral for any golfer to escape.
