Curtis Jones attracted transfer attention during the January 2026 window.

Tottenham Hotspur were said to have shown clear interest in the midfielder over the winter.

Arne Slot also faced questions about Jones potentially leaving for Inter Milan toward the end of the window.

In the end, nothing materialised, and Jones stayed at Anfield. But questions remain over his long-term future at Anfield.

With 18 months left on his current contract, there’s been some scrutiny over how Liverpool have managed his situation so far.

Speaking on the Anfield Index podcast, journalist David Lynch didn’t hide his disappointment with how things have played out.

He said Liverpool were in a tough spot and questioned why the club can’t seem to meet Jones’ contract demands.

Lynch remarked: “I just think it’s pretty terrible for Liverpool. He’s your only Scouser in the team now. You’ve developed him since he was seven or eight. Is there really not a world where you can give him a contract he’s happy with?”

“He’s still playing an awful lot of games. He’s genuinely useful. He’s not just filling space.”

“It doesn’t feel like he’s got his head on getting a contract signed and staying long-term. Liverpool are probably going to have to make a decision in the next 12 months.”

Curtis Jones did not want to leave Liverpool

What is really sad about the situation is that the 25-year-old previously had his heart set on spending his entire career at Anfield.

Speaking in December 2025, as per Sky Sports, he said: “Well I think that the biggest thing is that I still have to have the humble way about myself and I don’t want to say, ‘Yeah, na, I’m gonna be captain’ or anything like that.

“But I want to be captain of the team. I want to stay here for all my life like the man who I look up to, as everybody knows is Gerrard.”

As things stand though, it appears unlikely Jones will be at Liverpool beyond June 2027 when his current deal expires.

The club are currently working on new contracts for Dominik Szoboszlai and several other midfielders while tensions with Jones remain unresolved.
